Israel Blames U.S. for Media Reports About Iran Strategy

Insiders are denouncing reports in the U.S. press about military strategy on Iran—and pointing the finger at Washington. Do the disclosures compromise Israel’s security?

Top officials in Israel are charging that national-security leaks coming from the U.S. government are undermining Israel’s military options against Iran. “The problem is the Iranians are certainly paying close attention to these reports,” a senior Israeli official told The Daily Beast. “We are concerned about the leaks and we hope they are not intentional.”

The latest such leak appeared March 28 on Foreign Policy magazine’s website, claiming that Israel had been granted secret access to airbases in Azerbaijan near Iran’s northern border. The piece was sourced to senior U.S. diplomats and military-intelligence officers.

In Washington the article was referred to in a conference call on March 30 between leaders of the American Jewish community and Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough, according to notes of the call provided by a participant in the meeting. The first question McDonough was asked during the meeting was whether the Foreign Policy story was leaked to “undercut Israel.”

McDonough told the Jewish leaders that he personally abhors leaks and that he did not know the sources for the article. He also said he wouldn’t—or couldn’t—confirm the report. “The policy is to press the Iranians, not the Israelis,” McDonough said, according to the notes.

The Foreign Policy piece was written by Mark Perry, a journalist and author who specializes in intelligence and military matters. He has reported a series of exclusives about the U.S.-Israel relationship, including a piece this year that claimed Israeli Mossad officers were posing as CIA officers to recruit Iranian opposition figures for operations in Iran. The Daily Beast was not able to confirm the report.

Perry has provided counsel to the Palestinian side of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Between 1989 and 2004, he served as an unofficial and unpaid adviser to Yassir Arafat. After that he became the codirector of Conflicts Forum, a nongovernmental organization that specializes in bringing journalists and policymakers into contact with groups throughout the Middle East and South Asia that have been designated by the State Department as foreign terrorist organizations, such as Hezbollah. In 2009 he left that group after his codirector Alastair Crooke, a retired British MI6 officer, wrote an op-ed questioning whether the Iranian regime had really killed Neda, the iconic Iranian woman protester whose death was captured on YouTube.

Perry denied his recent article had an Obama-administration connection. “I’m not on the White House speed dial,” Perry told The Daily Beast. “I have no reason to believe that this story was intentionally planted with me. I followed up an initial report and built up the information over a series of months.”

Leaks from both the Israeli and U.S. defense and intelligence communities have been a treasure trove in the last year for national-security reporters. The Daily Beast, for example, in November reported details of Israel’s electronic war capabilities against Iran.

But the latest report comes after last month’s state visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both U.S. and Israeli officials have characterized those meetings as successful. In their wake, Israel has, for example, started sharing more of its military-planning data with the United States. And President Obama pleased Israel by declaring that it is U.S. policy to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, not to contain an Iran that has obtained such weapons.

“The administration has been unequivocal about Israel’s right to defend itself and the United States has done more to bolster Israel’s defense through the foreign military financing of $3 billion a year and done more than any country in the world,” a senior administration official said.

At the same time, it’s no secret that Obama and his top advisers are also seeking to dissuade Israel from launching an airstrike on Iranian nuclear facilities. On Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reiterated this theme. “It’s our very strong belief, as President Obama conveyed to the Israelis, that it is not in anyone’s interest for them to take unilateral action,” Clinton said. “It is in everyone’s interest for us to seriously pursue at this time the diplomatic path.”

When actor Sosuke Takaoka complained on Twitter last month that the glut of Korean dramas on Fuji TV had made the channel unwatchable, he probably should have guessed that the comments would get him in trouble with his talent agency. What he might not have expected is that they would ignite a popular protest movement.

While the Pacchigi! star (today more famous for being Aoi Miyazaki's husband) was summarily ditched by his agency, others have taken the idea and run with it. Yesterday, thousands of people marched through the streets of Odaiba, the home of Fuji TV's headquarters, to protest against the channel's perceived Korean bias. Organisers claimed a turnout of 6,000 for the demonstration, which followed an unofficial march held on August 7, and gave vent to a burgeoning community of online dissent.

More than any other channel, Fuji TV has been an enthusiastic champion of the so-called Korean Wave, devoting three hours of every weekday afternoon to imported TV dramas. As Philip Brasor pointed out in his insightful Media Mix column in yesterday's Japan Times, there's a good reason for this: it's cheap. Yet in the eyes of others, it's indicative of something much more sinister – a threat to the very independence of Japan's media.

As with many movements that are still in their infancy, the Fuji TV protests seemed to attract a wide range of interest groups. There were the nationalists, of course. When we arrived at the company's headquarters, a small group of men in blue jumpsuits were attempting to get past the security guards stationed outside the building, although it seemed like a largely symbolic exercise. Elsewhere, we spotted prolific conservative activist Kazuo Miwa and Toshio Tamogami, the former Air Self-Defense Force chief of staff who was sacked in 2008 for his revisionist views of Japanese wartime aggression.

However, the crowd was both far larger and more diverse than you'd expect at the average far-rightist hoedown, with people ranging from their teens to their 60s or older. Amidst the sea of hinomaru Japanese flags, you could find placards denouncing media bias and the perceived encroachment of foreign interests, in terms that would make a Tea Partier smile. One popular talking point is the 28.59% of Fuji TV's shares that are held by foreign stockholders. Another, more bizarrely, is the claim made on variety show Waratte Iitomo! that kimchi nabe is the most popular form of hotpot in Japan – all a big stitch-up, apparently.

A small portion of the crowd were obviously krackers. A 67-year-old woman started talking to us in English, explaining that she first got involved in the protest movement because of North Korea's abduction of Japanese citizens. She went on to explain that China and North Korea controlled the Japanese media, that 90% of crime in Japan was committed by nationals of those two countries, and that she had DPRK spies living next to her house who burgled her three times a day.

Others we spoke to espoused some more level-headed opinions. One man said that his problem wasn't just with Fuji TV, but television in general, and that the sooner we got away from a system in which millions could sit absorbed in the same programs, the better. Another cited some familiar arguments, bemoaning Japan's declining status in east Asia, and questioning the promotion of other countries' culture at the expense of its own. He echoed the view that the problem wasn't simply with Fuji TV, and said that he preferred to obtain his information via the internet and from independently produced leaflets.

'As you can see, this is patriotism, not narrow-minded nationalism,' said Kobo Inamura, a visiting professor in Public Policy at Chuo University. We're not so sure. Yet it's hard to imagine a demonstration such as this attracting anywhere near as many people had it happened before March 11. Like a looking-glass version of the anti-nuclear demos that we've seen in Tokyo since then, the Fuji TV protests seemed like an attempt to articulate a deeper sense of malaise, powerlessness and existential doubt.

But then again, some people really do just hate Korean dramas.

Pastor scammed $8-million from colleagues, parishioners: OSC

A Toronto pastor conducted an investment fraud that took more than $8-million from colleagues and parishioners -- including a stay-at-home mother with two blind children, the Ontario Securities Commission has concluded.

Marlon Hibbert, pastor and founder of Dominion World Outreach Ministries in Toronto, lied to investors about using their money in a foreign-exchange trading strategy and falsified monthly statements to make it look like they were earning a profit, according to a ruling Thursday by OSC commissioner James Carnwath.

“By virtue of Hibbert’s deceptions and untruths, many investors lost their entire investment,” the ruling concludes. “To date they are owed more than $8.2-million in principal, to say nothing of the promised returns of more than $13-million.”

The OSC has not scheduled a hearing yet to decide on a penalty in the case, but the regulator has the power to impose fines and prohibit people from working in securities-related jobs.

Mr. Hibbert was prominent in Toronto’s black community and many of his victims met him through those connections. He was a founder of the Fight for Justice organization, which advocates on behalf of the African-Canadian community in the city.

The OSC ruling said a forensic accountant concluded Mr. Hibbert raised $8.4-million from investors and took $673,000 for himself, using some of the money to make donations to charities and some to pay credit card bills, school fees, hotels and gym memberships.

Mr. Hibbert lied to victims by telling them he was using their funds in a successful foreign-exchange scheme, but there was no evidence he ever made a profit on any investments he made. Investors believed their funds were safe and earning returns when instead Mr. Hibbert was racking up large losses.

“He lied to investors when he tried to explain why the payments of principal could not be made and provided a litany of excuses, which were untrue, as to why repayments of principal were not possible,” the ruling said.

The decision said one victim who testified at the OSC hearing in the case was a stay-at-home mother with a son who is both blind and autistic and a second son who is blind. She said she and her husband invested $60,000 with Mr. Hibbert in 2006 and 2007 that they had received from her mother-in-law’s estate.

When she asked for half of the investment to be paid out in 2009, she met with a series of delays and explanations about why the funds could not be paid. Eventually she learned Mr. Hibbert was under investigation and the money would not be returned.

At the hearing, the unidentified woman was asked about the impact on her family and replied, “This is where I cry.”

“She described her desire to establish security for her oldest son who would probably never work,” the ruling says. “[She] said she wanted to put an end to Hibbert living off other people’s money.”

Another victim, a part-time teacher, said the impact of her investment losses was “pretty devastating” and she and her husband had to sell their house and move their three children into a small rental unit.

The OSC said Mr. Hibbert conducted the fraud through a company called Power to Create Wealth Inc., whose name later changed to Ashanti Corporate Services Inc.

Of course, the ancient Hebrews were forbidden to eat pork, and it's commonly assumed that health concerns were behind the prohibition. Commenter George Henderson prompted us to look into the modern case for avoiding pork with this comment:* "Nanji and Bridges identified possible problems with pork plus moderate alcohol in 1985 and other researchers have confirmed the pattern since."

Pork Consumption and Liver Cirrhosis

Pork consumption has a strong epidemiological association with cirrhosis of the liver. Startlingly, pork may be even more strongly associated with alcoholic cirrhosis than alcohol itself!

The evidence was summarized by Francis Bridges in a recent (2009) paper [1], building on earlier work by Nanji and French [2]. A relation between pork consumption and cirrhosis of the liver is apparent across countries and has been consistently maintained for at least 40 years.

Here is the correlation between pork consumption and mortality from liver cirrhosis in 2003 [1]:

The correlation coefficient of 0.83 is extremely high - rarely seen in epidemiology. Correlation coefficients range from -1.0 to 1.0, and a coefficient of 1.0 would indicate that cirrhosis mortality was strictly proportional to pork consumption. The very low p-value confirms the statistical association.

Here is the relation between alcohol consumption and mortality from liver cirrhosis:

The correlation coefficient is lower than for pork consumption.

In epidemiological studies, beef, lamb, and pork are often grouped together as "red meat." However, this may conceal differences between pork and the ruminant meats. Bridges found that beef actually appeared protective against cirrhosis:

In the present study using 2003 data, a significant negative association between dietary beef and rates of cirrhosis mortality was found.... [D]ietary beef may be a protective factor regarding the pathogenesis of alcoholic cirrhosis. [1]

This would be consistent with considerable evidence, discussed in our book (pp 57-58), showing that saturated fat is protective against liver disease, while polyunsaturated fat causes it. Epidemiological data confirms that saturated fat is protective; here is Bridges again [1]:

[A]nalysis of data from 17 countries indicated that diets high in cholesterol and saturated fat protected (i.e., inversely correlated) against alcoholic cirrhosis while polyunsaturated fats promoted (positively correlated) cirrhosis [8].

Beef is high in saturated fat, low in polyunsaturated fat. Pork is relatively high in polyunsaturated fat.

If the fat composition is playing a role, perhaps it is not that surprising that pork is more strongly related to cirrhosis than alcohol.

Either fructose or alcohol can react with polyunsaturated fat to produce liver disease. Sugar consumption, for example in soft drinks, may be just as likely to combine with pork to cause a cirrhotic liver as alcohol. But no other common dietary component can substitute for the role of polyunsaturated fat in causing liver disease.

Here is Nanji and French summarizing the correlation of pork with liver disease even in the absence of alcohol:

In countries with low alcohol consumption, no correlation was obtained between alcohol consumption and cirrhosis. However, a significant correlation was obtained between cirrhosis and pork. A similar relationship was seen in the ten Canadian provinces, where there was no correlation between cirrhosis mortality and alcohol consumption, but a significant correlation was obtained with pork. [2]

But fat composition is hardly likely to be the sole issue with pork. Most polyunsaturated fats in modern diets are derived from vegetable oils, not pork. It seems that there must be something else in pork besides polyunsaturated fat that is causing liver disease.

Pork and Liver Cancer

We would expect that if pork can cause liver cirrhosis it will also promote liver cancer, since injured and inflamed tissues are more likely to become cancerous.

Indeed, there is an association between pork consumption and the primary liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma. Nanji and French [3] write:

The authors investigated the possibility that dietary fat, meat, beef, and pork consumption might be factors that would, in addition to alcohol, correlate with mortality from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in different countries....

The correlation between HCC and alcohol was 0.40 (p < 0.05); that with pork consumption was also 0.40 (p < 0.05). There was no correlation with total fat meat, beef, and cigarette and tobacco consumption.

The correlation with pork consumption is as strong as that for alcohol. Beef has no relation at all liver cancer.

Another way of looking at the data is based on countries with low and high incidence of HCC. In countries with a high incidence of HCC (more than 3 per 100,000), compared to countries with a low incidence, alcohol consumption was higher by 128%, and pork consumption was higher by 68%. [3]

However, pork was not a marker for animal food or fat consumption. Fat consumption was actually inversely associated with HCC: high incidence countries ate 12% less fat than low incidence countries. [3]

Pork and Multiple Sclerosis

Nanji and Norad [4] looked for other diseases that correlate with pork consumption, and hit upon multiple sclerosis. The connection is remarkable:

A significant correlation was obtained between prevalence of multiple sclerosis and ... pork consumption (r = 0.87, p less than 0.001). There was no significant correlation with beef consumption. [4]

As noted earlier, a correlation coefficient of 0.87 is extremely high, and a p-value below 0.001 also shows a very strong relationship. MS is much more likely to befall pork eaters. Such a strong correlation makes it look like pork, or something found in pork, is the cause of MS.

Nanji and Norad further note that beef, the "other red meat," is not associated with MS:

The correlation between pork consumption and MS prevalence was highly significant. Also, of major significance was the absence of a significant correlation between MS prevalence and beef consumption. Having gotten that out of the way, if you got your dog from a breeder, ask that breeder what they recommend to feed. Chances are good that your breeder has been through the dog food rollercoaster and has found a food which they feel works best for their dogs. Use their knowledge. That's what they're there for.

If you are one of the wonderful people who chose to rescue a life by rescuing your dog, then you will have to find the right food for your dog through trial and error. Not all foods work well for all dogs. Remember that.

US Actor Rapes & Robs Tokyo Woman with Chloroform

An American actor has been arrested for robbing and raping a Japanese woman, having broken into her house and drugged her with chloroform.

Tokyo’s organised crime squad arrested a 25-year-old unemployed American going by the name of “Alexander De La Fuente,” charging him with rape and robbery in connection with a crime committed in June 2011.

In this incident he is said to have broken into the Ota ward apartment of a woman in her twenties, waited for her to return from work and then forcibly drugged her into unconsciousness using chloroform.

He then proceeded to rape her whilst she was unconscious, injuring her in the process, and afterwards made off with ¥5,000 in cash, as well as cash cards and other valuables.

The woman apparently had the misfortune to first meet her assailant 18 months prior to the attack, when he struck up a conversation with her on a train, but during the attack he was masked and she did not recognise him.

The crime finally came to light after he was arrested for robbing a Yokohama convenience store in January, and DNA tests revealed a match with DNA evidence found at the scene of the 2011 crime. He admits the charges.

Police say he arrived in Japan in November of 2008, initially finding work as an actor.

Media reports describe him as a “former talent” and an extra in various Japanese drama and variety programmes – although it would seem he is either an exceedingly obscure one or else appeared under an alias, as the only Japanese online mentions of anyone under his name are in connection with his arrest.

The Secret of Rick Santorum's Surprising Success

The explosive electoral phenomenon of former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum's campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is, as usual, the object of fascination by those not a part of it. It's a shock-horror fascination, to be sure, but something to behold nonetheless. As usual, many pundits have allowed their awe to cloud their capacity for rational judgment, drawing inaccurate conclusions about the causes and implications of Santorum's popularity.

Finding out exactly why the former senator (forcibly retired with a nearly twenty point margin by his constituency ) is such a draw for so many, one must understand his fans. A look at the electoral map of any recent primary, from Michigan's to Mississippi's, reveals that Santorum's base of support lies in sparsely populated areas. So far, he has lost most of the urban and suburban precincts, and this trend seems unlikely to change.

Thus we arrive at the real question of Santorum's success, what is the common sociological thread running through the rural areas that works so well for him? An objective look at the residents of these areas spotlights their poverty and lack of formal education. Perversely, Santorum routinely sneers at the value of education; and just one day before the Illinois primary, announced that he did not care about America's unemployment rate. Despite these stunningly arrogant, if not ignorant, statements, legions of supporters continue to crawl out of the woodwork to lend their support. Don't they understand that he quite literally does not have their best interests at heart?

It is this contradiction that drives the pundits into flights of hyperbole and smugness. The careful observer, however, will note the all-important outlook from which his or her answer can be found. In pro-Santorum areas, fundamentalist Protestantism, and to some length Catholicism, reign predominant. Santorum has based his entire run around his hardline interpretations of Catholicism. His rhetoric revolves around the themes of banning pornography, but also ventures into the boldness of bridging the separation of church and state. In short, he strategically raises highly emotional issues for voters who rarely hear these, and they are now repaying him in full.

Of course, this is political insanity in its textbook form. Polls have shown, however, that Santorum voters simply do not care. They support him strongly, despite admitting he is not as likely as his leading opponent to defeat the incumbent. Electability is not too important to them. Why? Because they do not identify with the contemporary mainstream of American society. As most live in rural communities, they have the unique ability to be isolated from the melting pots of the suburbs and salad bowls of the cities. In desolate locales, the post-1960s cultural shift that has washed over urban and suburban America has not been accepted.

Indeed, many out in the country are still beholden to a pre-digital, pre-Internet mindset. As they watch the rest of society change, these folks become increasingly reactionary. This happens when a nation's culture evolves or devolves; some groups are always left so far back in the dust that they are almost forgotten about. In the ever curious case of modern America, Santorum's candidacy serves as their bullhorn. I do not disagree with many traditionalist criticisms of our current cultural climate, especially insofar as proper manners and acceptable dress codes are concerned. The problem with many extreme traditionalists is that they see no distinction between the personal and the professional. This explains their falling for Santorum's lines regarding the enshrinement of fundamentalist Christianity in public policy measures; in fact, in their communities such a thing is commonplace. The isolation they endure blocks off alternative opinions and diverse ideas. This also accounts for why the rest of America is so befuddled by their support for Santorum.

The United States is a nation divided between two distinct macro-cultures. The first can be seen 24/7 on most television channels, heard while walking through the downtown of any city of any size, and experienced in an afternoon at the art museum. The second is not readily apparent, but can nonetheless be found in the aisles of Walmart, the pews of most non-mainline churches, and at events ranging from monster truck rallies to tent revivals. Undoubtedly the best way to monitor the culture clash, however, is by marking up a state's map to divide the populous counties from those less so. This division will accurately depict the divide between the areas that Santorum won and those claimed by his competitors.

Well, there it is. Santorum's favorability with his masses should not be analyzed on the basis of current American cultural norms. He and his devotees are operating on a continuum of their own; one which resembles the turn of the twentieth century far more than it does the twenty-first. Only the passing of time can be expected to close a gap this wide.

Scandals in Obama Administration being Overlooked?

The chief of the General Services Administration resigned, two of her top deputies were fired and four managers were placed on leave Monday amid reports of lavish spending at a conference off the Las Vegas Strip that featured a clown, a mind reader and a $31,208 reception. . . The leadership collapse came hours before GSA Inspector General Brian D. Miller released a scathing report on the $823,000 training conference, held for 300 West Coast employees at the M Resort and Casino, an opulent hotel in Henderson, Nev., just south of Las Vegas. From $130,000 in travel expenses for six scouting trips to a $2,000 party in Peck’s loft suite, event planners violated federal limits on conference spending.

The Obama administration had little choice but to take action in response to the inspector general’s damning report (the GSA’s chief was a political appointee). But at other agencies, wrongdoing may never come to light, because Obama has left an unprecedented number of inspector general positions vacant. Obama also fired an inspector general, Gerald Walpin, who uncovered fraud and exposed wrongdoing by Sacramento’s mayor, a staunch Obama supporter (the Obama administration allowed that supporter to avoid any serious penalty for his wrongdoing, and effectively allowed him to avoid repaying taxpayers the $350,000 he owed). The inspector general positions at the State Department, Labor Department, Homeland Security, and other key government agencies are vacant and have been for all or virtually all of the Obama administration.

By contrast, the Bush administration filled inspector general positions, and failed to replace even some liberal inspector generals hired by Bill Clinton, such as the Justice Department’s partisan inspector general Glenn Fine. Fine objected to the hiring of conservative lawyers during the Bush administration (which hired both conservative and liberal lawyers for Justice Department positions), but when he later served in the Obama administration, Fine had no problem with the fact that the Obama Justice Department hired onlyliberals for legal positions (it hired 113 overtly liberal lawyers and absolutely zero apolitical or non-liberal lawyers for 113 Justice Department positions, including positions involved in litigating the RLUIPA statute, which is often handled by conservative lawyers in private practice — illustrating that the applicant pool for the positions no doubt included qualified conservative applicants whose applications were rejected on ideological grounds).

I received an email as part of a blast that went out to several people in the activist community. It was commenting on a Boston Herald piece about Ethan Nadelmann’s comments on the Oaksterdam Raids:

And most important for activist leaders: “Nadelmann said the big question was whether the crackdown that began last fall was orchestrated by the Obama administration or by local federal officials.”
Ethan Nadelmann is a smart guy. Hopefully Cali activists don’t go blaming Obama right away without knowing who actually authorized this hit…I mean, raid…against a political leader. Oh wait…Russ Belville already did…

I’m sorry, what did I do? You mean my “buck stops here” comments? My odd belief that the Chief Executive of the Executive Branch has some say-so over the actions of Executive Branch departments like Justice and Treasury?

Well, yeah. Sorry, you don’t get to brush away President Obama’s complicity in this. To wit:

-- If he knows US Attys are doing this and authorized it explicitly – he is to blame.
-- If he knows US Attys are doing this but didn’t authorize it explicitly – he is unable to control his own executive departments and is to blame.
-- If he doesn’t know US Attys are doing this – he is willfully ignorant on the issue and is to blame.

The “Stockholm Syndrome” some Obama supporters are engaged in baffles me – and I was one of his most die-hard supporters! I was a political talk radio host backing him when Hillary was the juggernaut and taking plenty of “you’re a sexist” heat for it. I spoke for him at an “Artists for Obama” rally in Portland that is still on YouTube. I drove from Portland to Denver to blog the Democratic Convention just to be there for the historic moment.

So what will it take (besides the continued rendition, warrantless wiretaps, failure to prosecute Wall Street, caving on public option healthcare, authorizing drone assassinations, extending millionaire tax cuts, fill in the rest of the non-marijuana disappointments) to convince you Obama is not any sort of friend to the marijuana movement?

I truly had that hope for change. I heard him in 2004 say “the war on drugs is an utter failure and we need to re-think and decriminalize our marijuana laws, but I am not for legalization.”

I heard him say in 2008 that going after providers in medical marijuana states was not a wise use of federal resources because we have “terrorism” and other things to worry about.

I heard his Attorney General talk about what Obama promised in the campaign was now federal policy.

And then I watched as he nominated George W. Bush’s DEA Administrator to keep her job. A woman who referred to the slaughter of Mexicans by drug violence as a “signpost of success” in our fight against the drug gangs (not “cartels”… cartels cooperate with, not murder, each other).

“Our view is that the violence we have been seeing is a signpost of the success our very courageous Mexican counterparts are having,” said Michele Leonhart, acting DEA administrator. “The cartels are acting out like caged animals, because they are caged animals.”

The president is laughing at just about half of America these days

I watched as Rasmussen’s and Gallup’s polls shot up five and six percentage points, respectively, in support of legalization during Obama’s term, to the point where now, for the first time in history, more Americans support legalizing marijuana than support maintaining prohibition.

But when soliciting federal policy advice online on nine separate occasions, the issue of marijuana legalization is blatantly ignored, unless it is being laughed at.

During the president’s time in office, marijuana arrests of healthy people have remained steady and raids of providers of marijuana for sick people have skyrocketed. And this former marijuana smoker who “inhaled, frequently, that was the point” has either ignored that and let it happen or is actively directing the persecution of my people!

The response I often get is that Obama’s the best hope we have for positive move in the future. A Republican (likely Romney) in office would be disastrous! Really? What might he do, go after Berkeley Patients Group, Oaksterdam, and Harborside? Use the IRS to undermine medical marijuana businesses, pressure banks to not do business with medical marijuana providers, threaten the gun rights of medical marijuana patients, threaten governors of states not to implement their own laws on medical marijuana, and block legitimate researchers from studying medical marijuana while granting Big Pharma the rights to cannabinoid patents and starting FDA trials of cannabinoid medicines? Continue the policies of federal grants to local police to target drug offenses, but not other crime? Leave untouched the abomination of civil asset forfeiture? Allow American guns to be walked into Mexico? (Wait, to be fair, Obama did preside over reducing the racist crack/powder cocaine sentencing disparity from 100-to-1 to just 18-to-1… Obama’s crack policy: only 1/5th as racist as Bush’s and Clinton’s!)

Who knows? Maybe a Republican businessman like Romney, facing these disastrous economic times, beholden to the Grover Norquist pledge to never raise taxes, lets those wacky liberal left coast blue states go their own way with raising tax revenues by “sin taxing” those dirty hippies’ wacky tobaccy. Maybe the evangelical wing of the right wing and the Bible Belt gets behind Pat Robertson’s calls for legalization and pressures Romney from the right. Maybe violence in Mexico gets even worse and we see more of it spilling into the Southwestern US and the political will for legalization from conservative Arizona and Texas pushes Romney some more.

I often compare the marijuana rights movement to the gay rights movement, and in this article the comparison is apt. Much like the gay community, the Democratic Party takes the marijuana vote for granted. It’s the “Who Ya Gonna Vote For – a Republican?!?” lesser-of-two-evils marketing strategy that has made the Democratic Party such a powerful bloc, able to pass its agenda through Congress despite public disapproval… Oh, wait, sorry, that was the previous president and his Congressional majority. This president couldn’t pass it’s publicly popular agenda with a Congressional majority because he negotiated away the popular parts to appease the Republicans whose lousy governance got him elected in the first place, Republicans who are never appeased and will vote against their own ideas when appropriated by Obama just to see him fail.

Another response I get is “I’m not a one-issue voter,” which comes from someone concerned that a Republican in office and the judges he appoints will be far more devastating to many more issues the person is concerned with, say, reproductive rights, the environment, finances, taxes, etc. That’s a fair point. It tells me you find other issues more compelling than (if you’re a pot smoker) than ending your own criminality. It tells me you don’t really see the War on Drugs as an issue on par with others, despite its direct effects on racism, corruption, violence, imprisonment, suffering, economies, employment, environment, education, and public trust in law enforcement and government. That’s fine, everyone has their perspective.

But think of the three issues considered “third rails” in American politics – abortion, guns, and Social Security. Why must every politician tread lightly around these subjects? Why is a politician’s stand on these topics a virtual litmus test for office in most districts? Because the most die-hard supporters of those issues will never vote for a candidate that doesn’t support their issue. Because these supporters raise millions of dollars in small and large donations to their ideological think tanks and lobbying non-profits to maintain constant pressure on the candidates to support their issue and they back it up with campaign cash. But here in the non-profits struggling to pressure Washington on legalization, we rely on the large donations of three billionaires and barely raise a few million among all of us combined from all our stakeholder donors.

Another response I get is “Obama can’t legalize / ease up because…” followed by some excuse – GOP intransigence, first black president, has to get re-elected, too many other issues, whatever – and closed with “…but in his second term, he’ll be able to do what he wants on the marijuana issue!” I don’t understand how that works, when Obama in his second term has to lay the groundwork for the 2016 Democratic nominee (Hillary?) to win the office. If “He supports pot!” was going to cost Obama a second term, isn’t a Democratic president’s support going to hurt the next nominee as well?

For me, the choice gets simpler by the day. I cannot vote for someone who has exhibited not just indifference to the drug war but outright complicity in it. I cannot vote for someone who has laughed at my issue in public. I cannot vote for someone who has smoked pot himself and is smart enough to know the policies he maintains are unscientific, unjust, and cruel. That doesn’t mean I’m voting for the Republican nominee or the Libertarian or the Green or anyone else. I haven’t decided that. I may not vote the presidential contest at all, focusing only on state and local races and issues.

If Obama and the Democrats won’t take our issue seriously, they won’t get my support. It’s time we held our ground on our issue like the NRA, Pro-Choice America, and AARP hold ground on theirs. No support from tokers without support for tokers! And, mark my words, a GOP constituency growing ever-older and becoming a white minority needs more young and non-white voters… and legalizing marijuana is an issue that could net them both. Democrats, you dismiss us at your peril!

Abortion Protestors Harassing Child of Landlord Todd Stave

Abortion protestors in Germantown, Maryland have taken their crusade to roll back women’s rights to a new level. No longer content to target adult obstetricians and gynecologists, the malevolent protestors have set their sites on their enemies’ children.

Todd Stave is not an abortion doctor. He’s not any kind of doctor. He’s a Maryland landlord who happens to lease one of his buildings to a business that provides abortion services. He has been the target of angry protests demanding that he evict his medical tenants for years, but now he says those protestors have turned their ire against his young daughter.

“I understand why they protest,” he told the Washington Post. “Totally appropriate. It’s their right. They are protected by the First Amendment, and outside the clinic is probably the most appropriate place for them to express their views.”

His daughter’s middle school building, however, seems like a less appropriate location.

“It’s horribly outrageous that they’re going out in front of a middle school,” said Stave. “It is way crossing the line. I very much respect the right of the protestors to do so in front of the clinic, or on the steps of Capitol Hill, or the courthouse. But in front of a middle school is really not an appropriate place to do anything except protest for better teacher wages or the school budget.”

As is the case with many tactics implemented by the radical anti-abortion movement, the posters displayed outside the middle school are over-the-top, even obscene. Some challenged Stave by name in an attempt to indirectly attack his daughter.

The protestors never set foot on school grounds, so there is little recourse for angry school officials who contend that the graphic photos of mangled fetuses are visible and upsetting to the students.

I guess the fight for the unborn trumps the wellbeing of the post-born.

Arkansas Supreme Court: Sex Between Teachers & Students Okay

Arkansas teachers can have sex with students who are age 18 and older, the state Supreme Court ruled, calling a ban on such conduct unconstitutional.

In a 4-3 decision Thursday, the court said adult students, 18 and older, have a constitutional right to consensual sex. The age of consent in Arkansas is 16.

The court reached this conclusion as it dismissed the sexual assault charges against David Paschal, 38, of Elkins, Ark., a teacher at Elkins High school. Paschal was sentenced to 30 years in state prison after admitting to a months-long, consensual sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student.

The majority decision criticized the law for infringing on Paschal's "fundamental right to privacy," saying the law "criminalizes sexual conduct between adults."

While Arkansas has an interest in protecting adult students from the sexual advances of teachers, the law is not "the least restrictive method available" to fulfill this interest.

"Regardless of how we feel about Paschal's conduct, which could correctly referred to as reprehensible, we cannot abandon our duty to uphold the rule of law when a case presents distasteful facts," according to the majority opinion authored by Chief Justice Jim Hannhan. "Paschal's convictions for sexual assault in the second degree are reversed and dismissed."

The dissent criticized the majority for treating both members of the sexual relationship as equals, as opposed to "to a student-teacher relationship in high school where the teacher is without question the authority figure."

"In doing so, the majority skews and minimizes the role of a teacher and views a sexual affair between a high school student and teacher as merely one between consenting adults," Justice Robert Brown wrote for the dissenting justices. "That view distorts the facts of this case and discards the valid objective of the General Assembly to criminalize this conduct."

The majority's analysis says that the statute fails to explicitly criminalize a teacher's use of his position of "trust or authority" over an adult student to procure sex.

"That of course is preposterous," Brown wrote. "Any teacher knows that he or she occupies a position of trust or authority in the school ... for the majority to say that such authority vanishes when a student turns eighteen ignores the realities of the student-teacher relationship."

Moore said his colleagues in the majority have removed any barricade against high school teachers having sex with their students when they turn 18.

"This will cause significant disruption in our high schools and have a deleterious impact on education in general and the teacher-student dynamic in particular," Brown wrote. "That is completely contrary to the state's duty, which is to protect its students in the public school setting against sexual advances and exploitation by teachers. That duty has been completely jeopardized and undermined by today's decision."
